On Wobbly Legs
The giraffe is the tallest animal on the planet. Can you imagine seeing one being born? On a safari in Kenya, I witnessed the birth of a giraffe and although the baby is born taller than a basketball player, it was incredible to see it try to stand up for the first time.
In this portfolio I share the giraffe’s first steps with you.
Up at Last - Standing for the first time, this baby giraffe concentrates hard to stay on its feet, always under the watchful gaze of its mother (Laikipia, Kenya).
Up At Last 2 - After a series of failed attempts, the baby giraffe finally stood alongside its loving mother (Laikipia, Kenya).
A Mother's Support - The mother giraffe, quite incredibly, sticks out a long leg to support her newly born baby as it stands for the first time. I had never before seen this behaviour (Laikipia, Kenya).
Newly Born - A just born giraffe is so small that sitting in the grass, it does not yet reach its mother's kneecaps. This baby needs to pluck up the courage to stand and while it does, the mother looks on lovingly and anxiously (Laikipia, Kenya).
A Mother's Touch - A mother lovingly touches the head of her newly born calf, encouraging it to stand for the first time (Laikipia, Kenya).
