Beautiful Buffalo - Deep within the wilds of Ruaha I once discovered a forest. The buffalo were so wild and shy that all I ever saw was a cloud of dust. Sixteen years later I was able to take this photo of the herd, more relaxed in their forest (Tanzania).
Dust and Rays - When I started out as a wildlife photographer, living in Ruaha National Park, I discovered a secret forest. Sixteen years later, I returned to this same forest and captured this image, filled with dust and rays (Tanzania).
Flamingos in Flight - Flying low over a shallow soda lake in northern Kenya, the flying flamingos cast shadows on the water below, adding a marble-like texture to the background.
Lights, Camera, Action - In Africa the stage is often set: the curtain lifts, lights come on, props are in place and for all intensive purposes it is lights, camera, action. Except very often the lead actors are a no-show! On this particular afternoon, I was more than relieved when the lead role appeared on stage, walking through the golden forest just on cue (Zambezi Valley).
Tyson - Leopards are fiercely territorial and if you spend enough time in one place you get to know them personally. This leopard was one of my all-time favourites. His name was Tyson, due to his propensity to not shy away from a brawl. Here he sits aloft a termite mound, softly lit from the side by a spotlight. Note the nick on the bridge of his nose (Sabi Sand, South Africa).
Lion Gold - The Ngorongoro Crater is quite simply a slice of heaven. As the sun peered over the crater rim, a glow illuminated my subject and gnats in the air (Tanzania).
Zambezi Floodplain - This photograph offers a glimpse into an area of exceptional beauty and mystery, known simply and affectionately as 'the floodplain' (Zambezi Valley).
Jackalberry Forest - Ancient boughs, curved by time, frame an impala ram in the Luangwa Valley of Zambia.
Vanishing Elephant - It took me thousands of attempts to get this photograph but I am glad that I persisted. I wanted to create a photograph that visually illustrates the disappearing wildlife on our planet (Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia).
Mara Lion Cub - This little lion cub was intrigued by our vehicle and still shy, it stood behind its mother as I focused through the gap between her hind legs. Photographed in Kenya's Masai Mara.
Through Mum's Legs - This mother leopard was standing above her cub when I saw a gap to take a unique portrait of the cute baby, by focusing through mum's legs (Mala Mala Game Reserve, South Africa).
A Tender Moment - Cheetahs are excellent mothers, hunting and providing for their cubs every need and doing so all alone. Here a cheetah mother dips her head and greets her cub in a tender moment on the great plains of Kenya's Masai Mara.
Kalahari Aardvark - This photograph took me 19 years to get because aardvarks are really shy and nocturnal. Stalking one in the Kalahari grass, I could not believe my luck when it walked right past me (Kalahari Desert, South Africa).
Hand in Hand - A gorilla mother gently caresses the tiny fingers of her young baby. Photographed on an extinct volcano in Rwanda.
Quenching A Thirst - A baby rhino girl suckles peacefully on the grass plains (photographed in a secret location in Kenya).
Pelican in Motion - I was standing on the shore of Kenya's Lake Nakuru when this pelican flew past. The slow shutter speed allowed the blue twilight in, as the pelican flapped its way through my frame.
Twilight Giraffes - At the base of Mount Kilimanjaro I waited in the twilight, hiding in the grass, as a journey of giraffe ambled towards me in single file (Amboseli, Kenya).
Forest Lion - There are few things more exhilarating than meeting a male lion on foot. To photograph this magnificent beast in a mysterious forest was a moment and experience I will never forget (Lower Zambezi, Zambia).
Gelada Landscape - Living on the high altitude mountain plateaus of Ethiopia’s Simien Mountains, you find the Gelada baboon. These hairy creatures sleep on the vertical cliffs, climbing up to the plateau every day, to feed on grass. Here a big male is distracted by a root tuber, allowing me to get close enough with a wide angle lens.
Pelican Ripples - A lone pelican glides effortlessly over Kenya's Lake Magadi. Exposing for the white bird, the water becomes sensually dark and delicately rippled.
Hyena Cub - It was in the twilight that this hyena cub became brave and walked closer to inspect me. Using a wide angle lens I was able to capture this unique portrait (Mala Mala Game Reserve, South Africa).
Zebras In Dust - Photographed on one of my 'Bespoke Best Of Kenya' private photo safaris, this image is a personal favourite. It reminds me of Africa, a place I love and a place I call home.
The Great Hunt - The painted wolves of Africa are notoriously successful hunters. But it was only recently that a large pack in Zambia's Lower Zambezi National Park started hunting buffalo. As the pack of wild dogs, totalling over 20, stormed a herd of Cape Buffalo, the dust and atmosphere was surreal - making for a painterly portrait of 'the great hunt'.
Elephant Charge - Floating down the Zambezi River on a canoe, my wife and I spooked this elephant who was grazing on an island in the middle of the river. He gave us a mock charge and I dropped my paddle (much to my wife's dismay) to capture this low-angle portrait (Mana Pools, Zimbabwe).
Giraffe Plains - From a low angle and by placing my subjects between the grass blades, I photographed this tower of giraffe on the great plains of Kenya's Masai Mara.
Forest Leopard - There is a beautiful patch of forest along the Sand River in MalaMala (South Africa), and for the last 10 years I have hoped to see a leopard lounging in this forest. So, when I saw this leopardess (aka The Island Female) strewn across a low branch of a marula tree, I was beyond excited!
Golden Leopard - This beautiful leopardess occupies a territory along the western boundary of South Africa's Kruger National Park. Here she sits momentarily in the golden light of dawn.
Buffalo Forest - In the early light of dawn a buffalo bull walks through a forest on the banks of the Zambezi River in Zambia.
Flamingo Textures - Combining vibrant flamboyant flamingo colours with the typical browns and beiges of Africa; this layered and textured background is juxtaposed above by the smooth wave of gliding flamingoes (Lake Magadi, Kenya).
Flamingo Sprinkles - Flying high above Kenya's Lake Magadi in a helicopter, I zoomed out to capture the full extent of the avian spectacle below.
Painted Wolf - In a remote forest in Zambia's Lower Zambezi National Park, a pack of wild dog were on the hunt when one paused to inquisitively stare at me. The golden light filtered down through the trees, creating a background of golden disks.
Beneath A Giant - It took me many years to track down a tusker in Africa and when I found this elephant, I waited for him to lift his head to feed, so that I could capture his impressive tusks. Photographed on my annual Kenya 'Amboseli Photo Safari'.
Lion Cub Reflection - Lion cubs get very excited about visiting the waterhole and they often run ahead of the pride to get to water first. Here a young cub pauses at the water's edge, waiting for his mother, and allowing me to capture this reflection (Okavango Delta, Botswana).
A Mother's Protection - This young giraffe had just been born. Its mother stands above it while it prepares to try and stand for the first time (Laikipia, Kenya).
Galloping Giraffe - A giraffe crosses the dry lakebed of Amboseli in Kenya, with billowing clouds in the background.
Beyond the Shadows - A lion steps out from the shadows, creating this painterly portrait and no matter the angle, the beast seems to be looking at you (Mala Mala, South Africa).
Ngorongoro Tusker - At the bottom of Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater lives one of Africa's great tuskers. He is about to give a head-shake in this photograph and as he lifted his head, I could photograph the full length of his tusks for the first time. Photographed on my Tanzania 'Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti Safari'.
Mara King - In the dawn light, this beautiful lion paused momentarily on the great plains of Kenya's Masai Mara, allowing me to capture this stately portrait. Photographed on my annual Kenya 'Masai Mara Predator Safari'.
Leopards on the Prowl - A mother leopard and her teenage son are on the prowl. I use a slow shutter speed to convey a sense of movement (Greater Kruger, South Africa).
Zebra and Foal - A mother zebra leads her foal across the salt pans of Botswana to reach the grazing grounds beyond. Photographed from a helicopter.
Spitting Image - A leopard cub looks on with its ever watchful mother in the background. She is a spitting image of her mother. Photographed in South Africa's Mala Mala Game Reserve.
Puzzled by Pangolin - It took me 18 years to find a pangolin and when I did, these young lion cubs had beat me to it. They played with the pangolin and seemed utterly perplexed before eventually giving up (Masai Mara, Kenya).
Keeping up with Mom - Elephants are excellent mothers and always place themselves between perceived danger and their babies. Here an elephant, in Botswana’s Northern Tuli Game Reserve, does just this. I managed however, to focus through the mother’s legs, and onto the baby.
Golden Lion - A male lion, one of the dominant members of the Kambula Pride, looks up in the golden light of dawn (Mala Mala Game Reserve, South Africa).
